Chapter Sixteen

KENDRA

As Darius pulled his truck into his garage, a strong sense of déjà vu hit Kendra. It was only a few days ago she'd come here expecting a one-night stand. She'd gotten so much more.

And when Darius helped her out of the truck, she couldn't help but remember the last time, how they'd ripped off one another's clothing as they staggered into his house. If she hadn't freaked out about his lack of aura, they would have already slept together. In a non-platonic way.

This time, he just slipped his hand into hers and led her into the house.

"Are you hungry?" he asked.

She shook her head. The pizza they'd shared a few hours earlier had been massive. She probably wouldn't even need breakfast.

"Okay…" He brushed her hair back from her face. He did that a lot. She wondered what he was thinking when he did that. Then he led her down the hall to his room.

The covers were the same mess as when they'd left the other morning.

"Have you not been home since…since I ran away?”

He shrugged. "I had things to do."

"You were looking for me." Guilt jerked at her heart again.

"And now I've found you."

"I'm sor—"

He put his finger over her lips to stop her apology. "You've already said that. You don't have to say it again."

She took a deep breath. The guilt lingered.

"You’ve had a long day. Why don’t you have a bath and relax?” He nodded toward the adjoining bathroom. “Come find me when you're done."

She wanted to invite him to join her, but he'd already turned to leave.

Okay then.

A few minutes later, however, as she slipped into a hot shower, she was glad to have a few minutes to herself. Ever since her meeting with Manning things had been spiraling so quickly, she was losing track of time. Had it been three days since then? Or was it four?

The hot water pounded on her shoulders, loosening all the tight knots along the back of her neck, and she thought she could stay there forever. But Darius was waiting for her, and she wanted him even more.

When she stepped out of the shower, she found two fresh towels waiting for her. He'd been in the bathroom while she was naked. A little flutter of excitement tickled over her. But she didn't hurry. She took time to apply lotion on her legs, leave-in conditioner on her hair, and moisturizer to her face. Then she applied a thin coat of Doc Hazel's salve on her rash before wrapping her hand up in a fresh length of linen.

She slipped on a silky robe she'd almost left at her condo. Thank Aphrodite that she hadn't! The soft fabric caressed her skin as she went in search of Darius. By the time she found him in his computer room, a hint of arousal and anticipation had spelled over her.

He looked up as soon as she darkened his threshold. His gaze boldly caressed her body.

"Ready for some shut eye?"

"I had something a little more interesting in mind," she said.
